We make use of modern architectural techniques combined with traditional Kenyan architectural methods to get unique and locally relevant designs.

Traditional Kenyan Architecture

made use of readily available material in the immediate environment. For instance, the inhabitants of the coastal region of Kenya made wide use of Makuti and other reeds commonly found in coastal areas.

Inhabitants of the Kenyan interior mostly used dried banana leaves and reeds generally found in regions that are found inland of the country. The walls were made of mud and plastered with dung because this was widely and readily available and it provided shelter against rain, heat, wild animals and dust.

These elements have been adopted in modern Kenyan architecture and combined with western architecture. For instance the design in the image above uses very light weight roofing and a design that allows free flow of air.

At Tarakibu Architects we strive to incorporate these concepts in design to ensure that Kenyans have the most comfort in their households and maintain an element of their roots. For a sample of some of our designs, visit the following pages.
